How can I stop my dog from running away?

My dog is a miniature pinscher and almost 2 years old. When gets loose from his leash outside, he runs off and doesn't come back for as long as 3-4 hours. I am afraid that he could get hurt or injured and I will have no idea where he is. What can I do to make him stay near by when he is unleashed?
